Who is the real Banksy?
It has recently been reported that Robert Del Naja from the band Massive Attack could be the real Banksy. Some could speculate that his past experience as a graffiti artist and the coincidence of some of Banksy's street art being installed around Massive Attacks' tour schedule could be enough evidence to finally solve one of modern arts biggest mysteries.
To me the proof is in the pudding. Robert Del Naja is a very talented artist with some stencil executions that hints towards Banksy's work. His talent as an artist is the main clue here. Whomever Banksy may be, he has a solid foundation in graphic design. Banksy is a master visual communicator. For those who may not know the difference between art and graphic design: art has a goal of evoking an emotional response from the viewer, while graphic design is visually communicating a message in the clearest possible way. The approach to doing an art piece versus a graphic design piece is very different. Artist usually execute out of emotion, while graphic designers work to execute out of a core idea.
There is no doubt that the real Banksy has the skills of a talented artist, but I believe he is a graphic designer at his core. As a matter of fact I know he is because the real Banksy is in the picture below. Just keeping it real... ;o)
